Handwriting as an Art Form

Handwriting, whether it is done using one's hand, teeth, toes etc., represents a complex neuromuscular activity. Because of its point of origin, the act of writing is also referred to as "Brain-writing."

Regardless of the model utilized during one’s instructional years, individual style surfaces from the moment a writing implement is introduced. No two writing styles are ever completely alike, even when done by the same person.

Handwriting as a Projective Technique

Writing is considered to be an expressive gesture that communicates verbally and nonverbally. The interpretation of these nonverbal messages results in determining the personality traits because handwriting is believed to be manifested from conscious and unconscious thought.

In 1989 it was catalogued by the Library Bureau of Congress under, "Individual Psychology" with 3 subdivisions: 155.282 - Diagnostic Graphology, 262.2565 - Documentary Evidence and 658.3112 - Selection of Personnel by Management

In the field of psychological testing, it is classified as a projective technique and has the potential for universal application.

Empirical studies have been going on for hundreds of years. The school of Graphoanalysis, founded in 1929 by Milton M. Bunker, has its own research department with certified researchers.

Evaluations are considered nondiscriminatory because age, gender, race, creed or handedness cannot be detected.

Extensive training is required for accurate application of skills.

Is within legal constitutional rights based on the Fourth Amendment, "Search and Seizure Limitations" as long as the writing sample was provided willingly.

Is used readily in many European countries. Has been used in 80% of France’s largest corporations in the last twenty years. (The Wall Street Journal, Sept 3, 1985)

Is a beneficial technique for developing the personal intelligence through enhancing one's awareness and understanding of self and others.

2. A projective technique…sends "nonverbal messages" which can be converted to personality traits
